Joel D. Simon is the founder and chief scientist of Bathymetrix, where his work combines geophysics, ocean acoustics, scientific software, data management, and the analysis and writing that guide scientific results through peer review and publication.
Joel earned his Ph.D. in Geophysics from Princeton University, developing new approaches for detecting and classifying signals in noisy hydroacoustic data. He remained at Princeton for five years, overseeing a global array of mobile marine MERMAID sensors while developing scientific software and publishing research in marine and global seismology. Software he developed there remains in active use around the world.
Through Bathymetrix, he continues to consult for Princeton University’s Department of Geosciences and help lead the MERMAID project, working across scientific software, data systems, analysis, and research.
His work extends to the broader geophysical and ocean-observing communities. He serves on the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks, chairs its Working Group V on mobile geophysical instrumentation, and serves on the EarthScope-Oceans Standing Committee on Data. More recently, he has brought that experience to the design of next-generation global passive acoustic monitoring networks for observing biological, environmental, and human-made sound throughout the world’s oceans.
